New York Spring Fashion Week 2011: Alexander Wang

It would seem that according to Alexander Wang's Spring 2011 collection, white is officially the new black. With not one piece of black clothing in sight, Wang's Spring collection reflected a glimpse of optimism and purity. The collections theme 'construction' served a double meaning as it aimed to reflect the literal idea of a construction yard, as conveyed through the design of the clothing, metallic spurts and chain-like accessories, in addition to the 'building boom' currently taking place in the life of the label. Initially, I was quite overwhelmed by the sea of white but, like Wang's previous collection, when you actually see the clothes being worn they do look a lot better. I am a sucker for the use of metallics which I think contrast ridiculously well with white. The choices of color however, are not really all that favorable. In particular, mint green. Although, the metallic-like peach could look really nice on the right girl. The right girl being tall, slim and most definitely tanned. Pastel metallics definitely have the ability to wash girls out.

Upon first glance, this collection didn't immediately feel all that 'Wang' to me - possibly due to the absence of his usual love for black. Although, watching the video of the show a couple of times definitely changed my mind. As each season goes on, this idea of the Wang girl - 'the model off duty' - is continually at central focus. Using the likes of Abbey, Freja and Anja was probably one of the smartest marketing tools ever employed by the label as now most of us probably associate them directly as being the 'Wang' girl. They are the official and unofficial face or embodiment of the label in uison. And although the clothes display this strong feeling of femininity, the addition of a chunky chain necklace as worn by Freja in the closing look, help maintain the traditional Wang edge. I don't know if my judgment is that clouded or not but, I have never been a white girl and this collection definitely feels like it could make white grow on me. Wearing all of the white altogether may be considered slightly ambitious here on the streets of Melbourne but one white piece paired with something colorful or black surely wouldn't be.
